What is high potential and gifted education?

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students can take part in HPGE opportunities in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

Classroom teachers support and challenge students by delivering targeted learning opportunities tailored for students' needs. In addition, students are given the opportunity to be involved in a number of programs within school as well as external programs.

Across our school

HPGE classes in Mathematics are offered to targeted students in Years 1 to 6 to help them flourish and reach their full academic potential.

HPGE classes in English (writing, reading and debating), Science, Creativity (creative thinking and drama) and Leadership are offered during different terms throughout the year for students in Years 1 to 6.

HPGE interschool sports competitions on Fridays, also known as PSSA (Primary Schools Sports Association), are offered during the summer and winter seasons for students in Years 3 to 6.

Across NSW

PSSA representative pathway for Sport in New South Wales allows talented student athletes aged 8 to 12 to progress from local school sport through to state and national levels.

Maths Olympiad is an interschool competition specifically designed to stimulate and challenge high-potential and high-achieving students in Years 5 and 6.

Bebras Computational Thinking Competition is an international computational thinking challenge for primary and secondary school students, with students in Years 3 to 6 participating.

G.A.T.E.WAYS EUREKA and IGNITE Workshops are offered twice a year for students in Years 1 to 6 across a range of areas, including Science and Investigations, Language and Literature, Maths and Inquiry, and Critical and Creative Thinking.

The Game Changer Challenge for students in Years 5 and 6 is the department’s award-winning design thinking competition. Open to public schools across the state, the challenge centres on developing solutions to a real-world, wicked problem by applying classroom learning.

Film By the City for Years 5 and 6 students, provides teachers and students in NSW public schools with filmmaking skills and expertise to tell their own stories. Students script, produce and act in their own short films, with winning films showcased at a festival at Event Cinemas.
